In January, the parents of a Miami Trace star football player who died unexpectedly in October revealed what took the life of their 16-year-old son in an effort to educate and save the lives of others.
Since Nick Havens’ unexpected death on October 13, circulated that his death may have been caused by a hard hit sustained earlier in the night during a football game, but his family spoke out and revealed what really took the life of the Miami Trace junior.
Mother Dawn Havens held a seminar in January at Miami Trace where she told students in attendance what really took the life of their fellow classmate.
Fighting back tears — which later started to flow — Havens said that her son made a mistake that night that caused him to lose his life.
“As hard as this is going to be to admit the mistake that Nickolas made that night,” Haven said. “It seems that this was a one-time deal, and we will never know if he was in pain or whether he thought it would help him sleep or just because.”
According to the Montgomery County Coroner’s Office, Nick died following complications from a lethal dose of methadone, a drug commonly used to manage chronic pain.

The family said that they want to help their son’s classmates and their parents by sharing his story and teach about the risk of methadone.
“If I save another child, I’ll let God have Nickolas,” Havens said.
She said that by helping others, it was helping her family work through the grief of losing their son.
Dawn Havens, who is a hospice nurse, said that while she appreciates how methadone has helped many of her patients, her personal experience has been devastating.
Havens is scheduled to speak at McClain High School on April 4 to share Nick’s story once again; she is scheduled to speak at 7 p.m.
Students and parents are strongly encouraged to attend.
