An annual fundraiser dedicated to raising money for a local diabetes association are seeking volunteers to participate in their anniversary race.
In October 2003, there was talk of creating a fund raiser that would be modeled after the CBS television show ‘The Amazing Race.’ Teams of two would race from county to county throughout Ohio collecting clues that would lead them to their next location while completing in mental and physical challenges.
The decision was made that ‘The Race’ would be created to benefit the Fayette County Diabetes Association. Proceeds from entry fees and donations would benefit diabetic patients in Fayette County through awareness, educational programs, and with supplies.
A committee was formed, planning and design started, and on June 11, 2004 ’The Race’ debuted.
Fast forward to 2013 when the organization is planning their tenth anniversary for June 7 through June 9.
Over the 10 years that the event has been organized, The Race has raised more than $92,000 for the Fayette County Diabetes Association, according to event organizer Mary Rowland. In 2010, it raised over $23,000.
This year, 12 teams are expected to race throughout Ohio and compete for their chance at winning first place but The Race isn’t possible without the help of dozens of volunteers, said Rowland.
Prior to the race, the group will hold community fundraisers including a rubber duck race on May 11 at Eyman Park and a cake auction on May 31 at the hospital.
The Race will kick off at 5 p.m. on the campus of the Fayette County Memorial Hospital and the public is encouraged to attend.
