Creating a relationship between you and your physician is important, but the physician isn’t the only healthcare provider you can build a good relationship with.
Most physician practices and hospitals utilize physician assistants (PA) and nurse practitioners (NP) to help manage a patient’s care.
So what exactly is a PA and NP?
A PA cares for patients under the supervision of a physician. They are trained to provide many of the same health care services that a doctor performs. For example, a PA can order and interpret lab tests. A PA may also take medical histories, examine patients, make diagnoses and provide treatment for minor illnesses and injuries. A PA can treat patients of all ages and may work in various healthcare settings.
A NP is similar to a PA when it comes to how they can treat patients, but their backgrounds differ. A NP is a registered nurse (RN) with advanced education and clinical experience. NPs must choose a particular specialty (ex: family medicine, women’s health, pediatrics) during his or her training. This training allows him or her to empower patients and ensure better patient outcomes. LikePAs, NPs treat minor illnesses and injuries as well prescribe medications.
