Spring Storm Soaks County, Minor Damage Reported

The area experienced the first of many spring storms on Tuesday that’s expected this season.

Fayette County was placed under a severe thunderstorm watch shortly after noon on Tuesday, prompting officials to issue alerts to area residents.

Fayette County Sheriff’s office alerted area residents to the watch through their “Nixle Alert System” that sends text messages for free to subscribers. The alerts immediately alert subscribers to an impending weather threat.

The storm rolled into the county at around 5 p.m. causing large hail to fall in Bloomingburg and Jeffersonville; no serious damage was reported as a result.

Minor damage — such as downed tree limbs and overturned debris — were reported to the Sheriff’s office in the southern end of the county.

A lightning strike struck a barn on Good Hope Road causing it to go up in flames. No injuries were reported .

The National Weather Service urges area residents to brush up on their severe weather plans and to monitor local weather broadcasts because this is the first of many severe storms expected over the next several weeks.
